Why It Happens

What causes hip and knee pain?

The hip joint is very durable, but it can wear down over time through age or overuse, and chronic hip pain becomes more likely as it does. A slip and fall can break the bones of the hip, and arthritis affects the cartilage there too. Other common causes of hip pain include bursitis, tendinitis, hip fractures, work injuries, tendon or muscle strain, certain cancers and osteonecrosis.

Like hip pain, knee pain is often tied to normal aging or overuse. It can also come from damage to the bones of the knee joint (the femur, tibia and fibula), or to the cartilage and ligaments. Common causes include arthritis, sports injuries, auto accident injuries, a torn meniscus and medial plica syndrome. A knee that dislocates during a sport or work injury can also leave lasting pain.

How physical therapy helps hip and knee pain

If you have ongoing hip or knee pain, physical therapy can help manage the pain while restoring strength and improving your overall mobility. It is a safe, effective and non-invasive treatment, and it is prescription drug-free. The manual techniques and mobilizations used in physical therapy can reduce hip and knee pain and inflammation, restore your natural range of motion and strengthen the joints.

Your therapist works with you to design a plan around your individual needs, targeting the root cause of your pain instead of simply treating the symptoms. For better results, they may also recommend at-home exercises and passive treatments like heat and ice or electrical stimulation. Where other, more invasive options may call for surgery, this one is safe and gentle. Many people who do choose surgery for a hip or knee injury still need physical therapy to recover and reduce pain.
