Exam of foot structure, mechanics and gait.
Custom support under the foot, for when the way you load your feet is what keeps hurting everything above them.
What It Is
Orthotics are devices worn inside the shoe to correct biomechanical foot problems. They correct foot abnormalities, redistribute weight, take pressure off sore spots and improve balance, and they sit inside a treatment plan rather than replacing one.
Because they change how your feet and ankles line up, they also change what your knees, hips and lower back have to put up with. That is often the real reason a knee or a back keeps flaring: the way you load the ground has not changed.
There are two kinds. Functional orthotics control abnormal motion and correct alignment, used for things like shin splints and tendinitis. Accommodative orthotics cushion and support, used to take pain out of conditions like plantar fasciitis.

What It Helps
When a knee, hip or back keeps flaring, the way your feet load the ground is often the part that has not changed.
That stab in the heel on your first steps out of bed. It responds well, and it responds faster early.

Learn MoreYour hips and knees are the largest joints in your body, and it is common for them to hurt together.

Questions, Answered
You can, and for some people they help. The difference is that a shelf insert is built for an average foot and a custom orthotic is moulded from yours, then designed around your footwear, your activity and the specific problem being treated. If inserts have not worked, that is usually why.
Not necessarily. Sometimes an orthotic is a permanent support, and sometimes it is scaffolding while we fix the strength and mechanics underneath, and you need less of it over time. We will tell you honestly which one you are looking at.
They can, and early is often better. Bones and muscles are still developing, so correcting alignment and gait while that is happening can head off problems that would otherwise settle in for good.
