Why Is Physical Therapy Best for Shoulder Pain?

From the physical therapy team at Maxicare in Carpentersville.

Because a shoulder rarely hurts for the reason it appears to, and physical therapy is the only option on the list that starts by finding out.

It treats the cause, not the sore spot

Rest, ice and painkillers manage symptoms. Injections reduce inflammation. Surgery repairs structures. All of those have their place, and none of them addresses why the tissue got overloaded to begin with.

If the mechanics do not change, the tissue gets loaded the same way again as soon as you feel well enough to use it.

It is clinically proven and drug-free

Physical therapy is an effective first-line treatment for most muscle and joint problems, it reduces pain and dysfunction, and it usually saves you both time and money compared with the longer route.

It is also worth knowing that physical therapy can only be delivered by a qualified, licensed physical therapist, whatever similar-sounding treatments are advertised elsewhere.

It can keep you out of an operating theatre

Not always, and we will never tell you surgery is the wrong answer when it is the right one. But a great many shoulders improve without it.

Two of our patients wrote about exactly this. One was certain he needed rotator cuff surgery and finished with full range of motion and no pain. Another could not lift her arm more than six inches with a frozen shoulder and was, in her words, saved from surgery.

It gives you an endpoint

The plan runs through four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform and Prevent. Most patients see a significant reduction in pain within six visits, and you always know which phase you are in and what is left.

And every visit is one-on-one with a licensed therapist, so nobody is juggling you alongside two other people on two other tables.

If you want to know what is actually wrong with your shoulder, that is a one-hour question. Call or text us on (224) 858-5161, or request an appointment. You do not need a referral in Illinois, and the first look costs you nothing.
