Why a Physical Therapist Is Your Best First Stop for Shoulder Pain
From the physical therapy team at Maxicare in Carpentersville.
Most people with a sore shoulder start with a GP appointment, a scan, or three weeks of waiting to see whether it settles. All three are reasonable. None of them is the fastest route to knowing what is actually wrong.
A shoulder problem is a movement problem
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in your body, and that mobility is bought with stability. It depends on the rotator cuff, the shoulder blade gliding properly on the ribcage, and a neck that is not interfering.
Working out which of those has gone wrong takes hands and testing, not a picture. That is the thing a physical therapist does on day one.
Why imaging often muddies it
Scans of shoulders belonging to people with no pain whatsoever routinely show rotator cuff changes and wear. So a scan can tell you what your shoulder looks like without telling you why it hurts.
That is not an argument against imaging. It is an argument for putting it in the right order. If a scan is genuinely needed, we will tell you and help you get it.
You can come straight here
In Illinois you can be evaluated and treated by a physical therapist without a script from a physician. No referral, no waiting for someone else to open a door.
In one visit you can find out which structures still work, which do not, what is driving the pain, and roughly how long it takes to fix. That is a much better starting position than three weeks of hoping.
What happens after that
You get a plan with an endpoint, running through four phases: Pain, Prime, Perform and Prevent. Most patients see a significant reduction in pain within six visits, and you will always know which phase you are in.
And it is one-on-one with a licensed therapist every visit, so the person who tested your shoulder is the person treating it.
If your shoulder has been on the list for a while, start with an evaluation rather than a guess. Call or text us on (224) 858-5161, or request an appointment. You do not need a referral in Illinois, and the first look costs you nothing.
