The Pitfalls of DIY Exercises for Shoulder Pain

From the physical therapy team at Maxicare in Carpentersville.

There are thousands of shoulder exercise videos online and some of them are genuinely good. The problem is not the exercises. It is that you have no way of knowing which ones are for you.

The same exercise helps one shoulder and aggravates another

A stiff shoulder that has lost range and an irritated shoulder that is inflamed need close to opposite things early on. Stretch the irritated one aggressively and it gets angrier. Rest the stiff one and it gets stiffer.

From the outside they can feel similar. Testing is what separates them, and that is not something a video can do.

The three most common DIY mistakes

  • Too much, too early. Loading irritated tissue at the level you used to handle, rather than the level it can handle today.
  • Stretching into pain. Pushing through a sharp end-range is not progress, it is provocation.
  • Skipping the shoulder blade. Nearly every good shoulder programme trains the upper back and shoulder blade. Nearly every online routine skips straight to the arm.

And the honest one nobody mentions

Nobody is watching you do them. Rotator cuff exercises are easy to perform in a way that trains everything except the rotator cuff, using bigger muscles to do the job. It feels like work and changes very little.

That is the difference a set of hands makes. One of our patients put it plainly in her review: her therapist introduced every new exercise in person and made sure she could do it correctly before she took it home.

The better version of doing it yourself

Home exercise is not the enemy. It is most of the work. What changes the result is having the right exercises, at the right dose, checked by someone who can see what you are actually doing.

That is what an evaluation buys you: the same self-directed effort, pointed at the right target.

If you have been diligent for months with nothing to show for it, the effort probably is not the problem. Call or text us on (224) 858-5161, or request an appointment. You do not need a referral in Illinois, and the first look costs you nothing.
