Take Control of Your Knee Pain: Relief and Recovery at Home

From the physical therapy team at Maxicare in Carpentersville.

If your knee has flared up, there are useful things you can do today. There is also a limit to how far they go, and knowing where that limit sits saves a lot of wasted weeks.

Settle it down first

In the first day or two after a flare, the job is calming things down. Ice can help reduce swelling and take the edge off pain. Compression and keeping the leg elevated help with swelling too, particularly at the end of the day.

Rest is useful here in small doses. It is not a treatment plan. Knees get weaker quickly when they are protected, and quadriceps strength is the knee’s main support, so complete rest for weeks tends to leave you worse off than you started.

Then start moving it deliberately

Once the sharpest phase passes, gentle range of motion and strengthening matter more than anything else on this list. Getting the knee to bend and fully straighten, then loading the quadriceps, glutes and calves, is what changes how the joint feels day to day.

Which exercises, and how much, depends on what is actually wrong. That is the part worth getting right rather than guessing.

The things people underestimate

  • Load through the day. How much standing and walking you do matters as much as your exercises.
  • Body weight. Every pound travels through the knee several times over with each step, so weight management genuinely reduces the load on the joint.
  • What you eat. Some people find an anti-inflammatory pattern of eating helps how they feel. It is worth trying and it is not a substitute for treating the cause.
  • The hip and the ankle. Knees mostly hurt because of what is happening above and below them.

Where home care runs out

Self-care manages a flare. It does not tell you why the knee flared. If the pain keeps returning, if it swells regularly, or if you have started avoiding stairs, the useful next step is a proper movement assessment.

That is what tells you whether this is a load problem, a strength problem, a control problem coming from the hip, or something that needs a different kind of attention. See how we treat knee pain for what that looks like.
