Shoulder Clicking and Popping During Weight Training
From the physical therapy team at Maxicare in Carpentersville.
A shoulder that clicks under a barbell is one of the most common things lifters ask us about, and the answer is genuinely reassuring more often than not.
Noise on its own is not a diagnosis
Plenty of joints make noise. Tendons slide over bone, gas moves in the joint, tissue catches and releases. A shoulder that clicks and does not hurt is usually just a noisy shoulder.
What matters is the company the noise keeps.
When it is worth getting looked at
- The click comes with pain, especially a sharp catch at a specific point
- It is new, and it arrived alongside a change in your training
- Something feels like it is shifting or slipping rather than just clicking
- Strength has dropped, or you are avoiding a lift you used to do
- It aches for hours afterwards, or wakes you at night
What is usually going on underneath
In lifters, a painful click most often traces to the shoulder blade not moving properly on the ribcage, or to rotator cuff strength that has not kept up with how much pressing you are doing.
Overhead pressing volume that climbed faster than the cuff could adapt is a classic. So is a bench-heavy programme with very little pulling in it.
What not to do
Do not just stop training. Deloading a shoulder for a month usually means coming back to a weaker shoulder and the same problem. And do not push through a sharp catch on the assumption it will loosen up.
The useful middle path is to keep training the things that do not hurt while sorting out the thing that does. We will tell you which is which, and we would rather work around your programme than pause it.
Getting it checked
An evaluation tests the cuff, the shoulder blade and the neck, and tells you whether your click is a problem or just a noise. That answer alone is worth an hour.
