How to Keep Active and Do the Things You Love

From the physical therapy team at Maxicare in Carpentersville.

Your body is a machine, and it is the only one you own that cannot be traded in. Most of us maintain our cars more carefully.

Who is the right mechanic for a body?

You service the car before it breaks down. You do not wait for the engine to seize and then ask whether an oil change might have helped. Yet with our own bodies we almost always wait for the seizure.

For how you move, the specialist is a physical therapist. Movement is the entire training: which joints should move and how much, which muscles should be doing which job, and how the whole chain shares load.

The maintenance check nobody books

A movement assessment is exactly that: a check when nothing is acutely wrong. You may have no real pain today and still be carrying a stiff hip, an ankle that does not move well, or a weak side you have compensated for so long you no longer notice.

Those are the things that turn into an injury during your first week of a new activity. Finding them early is much cheaper than finding them afterwards.

This matters more as you get older

Strength and balance decline quietly with age unless something is done about it, and the decline is what shrinks the list of things you do. Our clinical director is a Certified Exercise Expert for the Aging Adult, accredited by the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy, which is a genuinely different skill set from general fitness coaching.

Getting stronger at seventy is a different job from getting stronger at thirty. It needs somebody trained for it.

Start before you have to

The people who keep doing what they love into their seventies and eighties are rarely the ones who were the most athletic at forty. They are the ones who dealt with problems while the problems were still small.

One of our patients is 84 and finished his plan cleared to keep training at his own health club. He wrote that any age can be helped, and he is right.

If there is something you have quietly stopped doing, that is worth an hour of somebody’s attention. Call or text us on (224) 858-5161, or request an appointment. No referral needed in Illinois.
