How Force Plate Assessment Can Benefit CrossFit Athletes
From the physical therapy team at Maxicare in Carpentersville.
CrossFit asks you to squat, pull, press, run and land, often in the same session and often when you are already tired. Small asymmetries that go unnoticed at low intensity become the reason something tears at high intensity.
What a force plate assessment measures
A force plate measures ground reaction forces: the forces produced when your feet hit the ground. You stand on the platform and perform movements such as squats and jumps, and it records how much force you produce and, crucially, how it is shared between your two legs.
That second part is what you cannot see in a mirror or a phone video.
Finding the weakness before it finds you
The data shows imbalances in strength and stability that you have been compensating for without knowing. A leg producing meaningfully less force than the other is a leg that will be the one to give way under a heavy clean or a hard landing.
Once you know which side and which movement, it stops being a mystery and becomes a training problem with a solution.
Technique you can actually measure
It also puts numbers on your movement. How evenly you load a squat, how quickly you produce force, how you absorb a landing. A therapist reading that data can point at the specific thing to change rather than offering a general cue.
Tracking whether it is working
Reassessing at intervals shows whether the gap between sides is closing, which tells you whether your programme is doing what you hoped. It is one of the few ways to know that rehabilitation or accessory work is genuinely paying off rather than just feeling productive.
This matters most coming back from injury, where the honest question is not whether it hurts but whether the leg is producing the same force as the other one.
Who it is worth it for
Anyone returning from a lower body injury, anyone whose numbers have stalled without an obvious reason, and anyone who wants to find the weak link before it becomes the injury. It pairs naturally with sports rehab.
